Different Strokes: A Study on Line, Shape, & Curves is a premiere, community pop-up art exhibit, benefit, and brand launch celebration hosted by IATA Creative Agency, myself (Day Rankin), and painter, Zina Brown. We partnered with the Downtown Association of Hattiesburg to flip a vacant space downtown into a cool, entertaining, diverse, thought-provoking, and loungy environment for one night only with the combined mission: #GetDowntown. The event, Thursday, October 19, will host an audience of more than 75 people and is being curated and brought to the public by IATA Creative Agency.
Zina and I, both Mississippi natives, share a deep passion for the arts despite the state’s lack of exposure, opportunities, and resources for young, diverse groups to showcase and experience these culturally. Knowing the importance of community events and receiving so much positive feedback on those of the past however, it inspires us to be really innovative in our approach.
A lot of young people from Hattiesburg have never seen exhibition style art or have been able to appreciate paintings in their glory on a white wall in that type of setting. It’s so simple, yet so important. I want people to see that art isn’t just a closed form, or what’s directly in front of you but instead about perception, personal interpretation, use of lines, shape, and in my case, strokes. – Zina Brown
Hosting events is one of the many ways we build community support, fundraise for materials, expenses, future projects, and most importantly showcase and expose others to art and creativity. As artists, we also use events as opportunities to connect with the public, promote, and create new partnerships with businesses and community leaders.
Eeek! Both Zina and I are so excited about the work we’ve put into making this event amazing and it all coming together for the greater good. We’re even more excited to celebrate and enjoy the night with you, which means you should get fly and join us on October 19th at The Weekender of Downtown Hattiesburg for good music, food, fine art, interactive entertainment, giveaways, and all around great vibes. Doors open at 6:30PM.
